Using GDB/Insight with a Multi-Processor EmbeddedICE Interface Unit

Multi-ICE GDB Server

The Simtec board provides a 20-pin connector with the standard ARM Multi-ICE pinout so that ARM's multi-processer EmbeddedICE interface unit can be used for debugging. This section gives instructions on how to make your GNU debugger (GDB/Insight) talk to ARM's proprietary Multi-ICE server software.

The interface that is required for the GNU debugger to talk to ARM's Multi-ICE server software is called the Multi-ICE GDB server. You need to build this server yourself if you would like to use GDB/Insight. Therefore, please read the very good tutorial on the eCos web-site [Using the ARM Multi-ICE with GDB]. The Multi-ICE GDB server sources, which are linked on the eCos page, do not compile with recent GDB versions. Consequently, you need to use the rather old GDB 5.1.1 for the Multi-ICE GDB server to compile.

Basically, you need to obtain the following sources:

The compilation and installation process is desribed very well on the eCos page, so [please refer to it] for further details. From now on it is assumed that the build succeeded and the binary files relating to the Multi-ICE GDB server have been installed in the ARM Multi-ICE server directory.

ARM Multi-ICE Server

Next, ascertain that version 2.2.6 (build 1346) of the ARM Multi-ICE server software is installed on your development box. In case it isn't, you can obtain the required update at the [support page of the ARM website] alongside with the instruction on how to install the update.

Configuration File for the EB2410ITX

Automatic configuration does not detect the scan chain correctly. Therefore, I have provided my configuration file, which perfectly works for the Simtec EB2410ITX.
