A UART is a Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter. It's an interface to asynchronous serial - generally
RS232 when connected with a suitable
RS232/line driver.
The LPC210x has one UART with all Modem Control signals and one basic UART with just RxD and TxD pins.
