USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. It's pretty universal and serial, but it's not a bus - each connection is between precisely two devices, and they have different electrical and logical roles.

The USB/Client is the slave, and the USB Host is the master. Generally, peripherals are clients and computers are hosts, but of course it gets complicated when there are embedded computers in the peripherals!
